I’ve been busy in the kitchen today, baking up a storm to finish up a few gifts for my neighbours. I started by whipping up a batch of the Gingerbread Men that I used to bake with my grandmother. I’ve always had a bit of fun decorating them!
I’m also roasting up some spiced pecans – a Christmas favourite- and some of my Pecan-Pretzel Numnums.
These babies are super simple to make. All you need a bag of pretzels, some mini chocolate caramel cups (like Rolo’s), and some pecan halves. Lay out your pretzels on a parchment lined cookie sheet, top with the chocolates and bung them into a warm oven (about 175 or 200 F). Keep an eye on them, you want the candies to soften, but not melt. Once they’re softened, take them out of the oven, press the pecan halves into the tops and set them aside to set. They’re always a hit, and something that you can put together easily if you keep the ingredients on hand. You know, if you need a quick sweetie when company turns up…
I love the familiar scents of these old family favourites. The whole house just feels happier and warmer with the scent of ginger and cinnamon hanging in the air. Plus, I have so much fun decorating the cookies, that was always my favourite part. Best of all, these little treats bring joy to others. And that is some real Christmas Magic.
