I want to talk about adding a little hygge magic to the daily round. No matter who you are or what walk of life you’re in, I know that there are things that you HAVE to do even though they’re not the most exciting or delightful parts of your day. I get it, housework never stops. The trick is to sprinkle a little magic over the task at hand and MAKE it delightful -or at least satisfying! Let’s call it the “Mary Poppins Effect.”
I’ll give you an example: When I was in Paris one of the ladies in our group told us all that she loved to hand wash her dishes after dark, by the light of a few candles. In her words: “It takes it from being a mundane chore to adore and explore.” To this day I can’t hand wash dishes without thinking about that magical lady and smiling, and I still haven’t tried washing dishes by candlelight!
You see, the smallest of shifts can have meaningful impact. What if the next time you dust, you blast “Swan Lake” and pretend to be a prima ballerina? What if rather than “I have to clean out the garage (or closet/junk drawer etc.)” you tell yourself that you’re digging for buried treasure? If nothing else, blast some good tunes, take regular breaks (15 minutes on, 15 minutes to sit and do something else), maybe even rope in a few friends to help and make a day of it. The point is that magic, pleasure, and even hygge, they’re all exactly where you tell yourself they’re going to be.
Mindset transforms mountains.
